Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. Its location is in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, making it part of the Middle East. However politically, it is a member of the EU and culture-wise is more similar to Greece than its closer Middle Eastern neighbors. The Republic of Cyprus has been an independent country since 1960. It was formerly a British territory and is still part of the commonwealth. In 1974, an invasion by the Turkish Army meant that 36% of the Island was and continues to be occupied by Turkish forces. (The story is much longer and more complicated than that one sentence).
